On Thursday October 28th Facebook changed their company name from Facebook to Meta. This name change is reflective of the many changes in the company itself. What will this mean to you?
For the average Facebook user, you won't see much change. Facebook over time has collected Instagram and WhatsApp and created their own new small company called Oculus. Each of these having their own unique way of connecting people.
In the past, when Facebook purchased Instagram, they connected Instagram to Facebook. You could cross post to each platform by only posting on one. WhatsApp is integrated with Facebook Pages and Businesses so you can reach customers with a phone number. With this name change Facebook, now Meta, seems to be separating the Oculus arm of their company and pairing it with Reality Labs, the hardware division of Meta.
With this rearranging, Meta wants to become your virtual home away from home. Where you can decorate your virtual space, have your friends and family over virtually, play games, watch movies, work and design yourself the same way you would when playing any video game.
Zuckerberg is quoted as saying, "...a lot of this is a long way off, with elements of the metaverse potentially becoming mainstream in five to 10 years.”
“We believe the metaverse will be the successor of the mobile internet,” Zuckerberg said. “We’ll be able to feel present – like we’re right there with people no matter how far apart we actually are.”"
The name change, and subsequent ticker change to MVRS on December 1st, seems to show big things coming for users of Meta. In the far future Meta may integrate all of the companies under the Meta umbrella to create this virtual space.
What do you think? Will you use Metaverse?
